The text most people recognize. Beginning with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Was scrambled in the 1500s from a real philosophical work by Cicero. The unknown printer cut the words and reassembled them into a specimen sheet that became, over five centuries, the default pseudo-Latin used everywhere from print mockups to Photoshop comps to design tools today.
The familiar opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" is corrupted from De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written by Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The original Latin reads "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…". Translated, "Nor is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires pain itself because it is pain." The pseudo-Latin used as Lorem Ipsum is what you get when an early printer chopped that passage apart and lost the leading words.
The fact that Lorem Ipsum is corrupted Cicero rather than invented gibberish matters for two reasons: it gives the text the natural rhythm of real Latin (which reads more convincingly than randomized syllables would), and it means searching for the phrase in production usually catches accidental placeholder text that should have been replaced before launch.
The argument for placeholder text comes down to one observation: real content distracts from layout review. If you put real headlines, real product descriptions, or real bios into a wireframe, the people reviewing it will read the words. They'll comment on the writing. They'll ask whether the bio is current. The conversation drifts from "does this layout work?" to "should we hire that copywriter again?"
Lorem Ipsum solves that. The reviewer's brain registers "this is a paragraph of text," takes in the visual rhythm, and moves on to the actual question. Whether the body text is readable at this size, whether the line length is right, whether there's enough vertical space between paragraphs.
The same logic applies to font specimens, design system documentation, and developer mockups. When you're checking how a new font renders at 14px or whether a CSS framework's typography scale feels balanced, real content actively gets in the way.
Several alternatives have appeared over the years, each with a different trade-off.
Bacon Ipsum replaces Latin with cured-meat words: pancetta, prosciutto, brisket, kielbasa. It's funny once and useful when you want clients to pay attention to placeholder text in a sales context. They'll read it because the words are familiar, then realize it's nonsense.
Cupcake Ipsum, Hipster Ipsum, Corporate Ipsum, and dozens of theme variants all do the same trick: substitute a wordlist while preserving sentence structure. Useful for novelty mockups; counterproductive when you actually need the eye to stop on layout.
Real-content placeholder. Using actual brand copy or genuine sample text. Is what most modern design systems recommend for late-stage mockups, when layout decisions are settled and content fit needs evaluation. Lorem Ipsum stays better for early-stage layout work where the goal is pure visual evaluation.
Sample text from public domain works. Opening paragraphs of Pride and Prejudice or Moby-Dick. Gets used in font specimens because real prose tests letter-pair frequencies that pseudo-Latin misses. Type designers use this; UI designers usually don't need it.
Match the length you'll have in production. If your real product descriptions will be 50–80 words, generate 60-word paragraphs. If your blog post bodies will run 1,500 words, generate enough Lorem Ipsum to fill that. Three to four paragraphs of typical length. Underfilling makes layouts look airier than they'll actually be; overfilling does the opposite. Both produce mockups that won't survive contact with real content.
For headlines, generate three to seven words. English news headlines average around five words; product titles run six to nine; social-post headlines six to twelve. The exact count matters less than the visual length. Type out the longest plausible real headline and check that your layout doesn't break.
Lorem Ipsum shipping to production. The single most embarrassing pattern in web development: a designer drops Lorem Ipsum into a CMS field, the developer wires it up, no one replaces the placeholder before launch, and a real customer sees "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" on their order confirmation. The fix is to grep your codebase and content database for "lorem ipsum" before any production deploy, or to use a placeholder that's harder to miss like "REPLACE THIS TEXT" in red.
Pseudo-Latin in accessibility audits. Screen readers attempt to pronounce Lorem Ipsum, often badly. If you're sharing a mockup with a stakeholder using assistive technology, replace placeholder text with intelligible alternatives or note clearly that the text is filler.
Wrong character set for your audience. Lorem Ipsum is Latin-script only. If your design serves Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, or Hindi readers, generic Lorem Ipsum can hide layout problems specific to those scripts. Different baseline heights, right-to-left flow, character widths. Use script-appropriate placeholder for international layouts.
Pick the unit you want. Words, sentences, or paragraphs. And the count. The generator selects from the classical Lorem Ipsum vocabulary of about 200 words, assembles them into sentences of plausible length (5 to 18 words, weighted toward 8–12 like real prose), and groups sentences into paragraphs of three to seven sentences each. The "Start with Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" toggle controls whether the canonical opening appears at the beginning, which is useful when you want immediate visual recognition that the text is placeholder.
The output is plain text, ready to paste into any design tool, CMS, or document. There's no HTML wrapping, no smart quotes, no special characters that will trip up downstream tools. If you need a specific length in characters rather than words, paste the result into the Character Counter to check.
Generate once, save the result. If you're working on a design system or a multi-screen mockup, generate one canonical block of Lorem Ipsum and reuse it everywhere. Different placeholder text on every screen makes layouts look more varied than they actually are, hiding consistency problems.
Use varied lengths intentionally. Real product catalogs have a mix of short, medium, and long descriptions. Real blog feeds have a mix of headline lengths. Generate three or four different paragraph lengths and rotate through them so your mockup reflects production reality.
Keep one paragraph extra-long. Edge cases. The user with the unusually long bio, the product with the giant disclaimer, the blog post with the 200-character headline. Are where layouts break. Generate at least one Lorem Ipsum block 50% longer than your "average" target so you catch overflow problems early.
Neither, exactly. It's corrupted Latin. Chopped from a real Cicero passage but missing leading words and reassembled in nonsense order. Native Latin readers will recognize most of the individual words but find the sentences meaningless.
Convention. The "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opening has been the standard specimen text since the 1960s, when Letraset began using it on dry-transfer sheets. Designers learned to recognize it as "this is placeholder, ignore it" and the convention stuck. You can disable the canonical opening in this generator if you want fresher-looking text.
