How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words? (2026 Guide)

About 2 pages single-spaced, about 4 double-spaced. That is the answer for 12-point type and 1-inch margins, and it moves with every font, size and paper choice. Here are the numbers from 500 to 10,000 words, where they come from, and when to trust them.

On this page

1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced and about 4 pages double-spaced, assuming a 12-point font and 1-inch margins on US Letter paper. In 12-point Times New Roman the estimate is 1.8 pages single-spaced and 3.6 pages double-spaced; in 12-point Arial it is 2.0 and 4.0.

That is the number most people need. The rest of this guide explains why it moves, how much each setting moves it, and what to do when a teacher, editor or client measures length in pages while you measure it in words.

All figures are estimates for continuous body text on US Letter with 1-inch margins, produced by the same model as the TextKit calculator. Round to the nearest half page when you plan: a title page, a few headings or a reference list will add more than the rounding does.

Get the number for your exact settings. The Words to Pages Calculator converts any word count, or pasted text, to pages for eight fonts, five sizes, three spacing options and US Letter or A4, with a quick-reference table that updates as you change settings.

What counts as a page?

A page is a unit of layout, not of length, which is why two people can disagree about how long 1,000 words is and both be right. To keep the numbers comparable, every estimate in this guide rests on the same assumptions:

  • Paper. US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) unless noted, with 1-inch margins on every side, which leaves a text block of 6.5 x 9 inches.
  • Text. Continuous paragraphs of ordinary English prose, with no headings, lists, tables or images.
  • Font metrics. The average character width and the default single line height of each font, measured from the font files themselves.
  • Calibration. The model is tuned so that 12-point Times New Roman, single-spaced, holds 550 words per page, the widely repeated convention, and the same adjustment is applied to every other font.

That adjustment comes out at about 0.77. In plain terms, pure geometry says a completely full page of 12-point Times New Roman could hold around 713 words, but real paragraphs end in short lines and start with indents, and about a quarter of the page goes to that white space. Using one factor for every font keeps the comparisons fair, even if your own documents run a little tighter or looser than the average.

How many pages is 500 words?

500 words is about 1 page single-spaced and about 2 pages double-spaced. In 12-point Times New Roman the estimate is 0.9 pages single-spaced and 1.8 double-spaced; in 12-point Arial it is 1.0 and 2.0.

This is the classic length of a short response paper, a long cover letter or a personal statement with a strict limit. If a prompt says "one page, single-spaced," 500 words in Arial will fill it almost exactly, while the same text in Times New Roman leaves a few lines to spare. For 250 words, halve everything: about half a page single-spaced and one page double-spaced.

How many pages is 1,500 words?

1,500 words is about 3 pages single-spaced and 5 to 6 pages double-spaced: 2.7 and 5.5 pages in 12-point Times New Roman, 3.0 and 6.1 in 12-point Arial. At 750 words the figures are 1.4 and 2.7 pages in Times New Roman.

A 1,500-word assignment is where font choice starts to show. The same essay is five and a half pages in Times New Roman and just over six in Arial, which can decide whether you meet a six-page minimum. If the brief allows either font, check the page requirement against the font you are actually using, not the one your classmate used.

How many pages is 2,000 words?

2,000 words is about 4 pages single-spaced and 7 to 8 pages double-spaced: 3.6 and 7.3 pages in 12-point Times New Roman, 4.0 and 8.1 in 12-point Arial. At 2,500 words, expect about 9.1 pages double-spaced in Times New Roman (10.1 in Arial), and at 3,000 words about 10.9 (12.1 in Arial).

This is the range of a substantial term paper, a long report section or an in-depth article. For blog posts, pages rarely matter; what matters is whether the length serves the reader, which our guide to blog post length covers in detail. For papers, 2,000 words double-spaced is realistically an eight-page file once you add a title page and references.

How many pages is 5,000 words?

5,000 words is about 9 to 10 pages single-spaced and 18 to 20 pages double-spaced: 9.1 and 18.2 pages in 12-point Times New Roman, 10.1 and 20.2 in 12-point Arial. At 10,000 words, double those figures: about 18.2 to 20.2 pages single-spaced and 36.4 to 40.4 double-spaced.

At this length small differences compound. The gap between Times New Roman and Arial is two pages at 5,000 words and four at 10,000; the gap between US Letter and A4 is under a page at 5,000 words and about 1.4 pages at 10,000. Long documents such as theses, grant narratives and manuscripts nearly always come with a formatting template, and the template, not a rule of thumb, should decide your final page count.

Why does the font change the answer?

Every typeface has its own average character width and its own default line height, and both come straight from the font file. Here is what the model gets for 12-point type, US Letter and 1-inch margins:

Font (12 pt)Words per page, singleWords per page, double1,000 words, double-spaced
Times New Roman5502753.6 pages
Calibri4922464.1 pages
Arial4952484.0 pages
Georgia4882444.1 pages
Helvetica4712364.2 pages
Verdana3961985.0 pages
Comic Sans MS3741875.3 pages
Courier New3631825.5 pages

Courier New is monospaced, so every character, from a thin "i" to a broad "m", takes the same width, and that makes it the least compact font in the list. Verdana measures widest of the proportional fonts, and Comic Sans combines a wide letter with the tallest default line of the eight. Times New Roman is the most compact of the eight.

Size compounds the effect. Because letters grow both wider and taller as the point size rises, capacity falls roughly with the square of the size: 12-point Times New Roman holds about 550 words single-spaced, 11-point about 655, and 14-point about 404.

Spacing is the biggest lever of all. Double spacing halves the words per page and 1.5 spacing cuts them by a third, and neither changes a single word of your text. It is also why "make it double-spaced" is the fastest way to turn two pages into four.

Does Spanish take more pages than English?

It depends on what you compare, and the difference matters. Compare the same number of words and Spanish fills slightly less space, because its words are a little shorter on average. Compare the same content in both languages and Spanish fills noticeably more, because it needs more words to say the same thing.

We measured it on our own site. Across TextKit's 42 matching English and Spanish articles, roughly 48,500 English words against 58,500 Spanish ones (code and tables excluded), the Spanish versions ran 21% more words and 16% more characters. The average Spanish word took 5.96 characters including its space, against 6.18 in English. It is one kind of text, carefully adapted technical writing rather than word-for-word translation, so treat it as a guide, not a law.

The localization industry reaches a similar conclusion another way. IBM's guidelines, summarized by the W3C, put the average growth of English text translated into European languages at around 30% in characters once the source runs past 70 characters, and far more for very short strings. That figure is about characters and pools several languages, but it points the same way.

In practice: 1,000 words written directly in Spanish fill slightly less than the calculator's estimate, which is calibrated on English prose, by roughly 4%. A 1,000-word English text translated into Spanish, on the other hand, will land closer to 1,200 words and fill about 16% more pages. If you are translating a paper with a page limit, budget for that margin from the start.

What do APA, MLA and Chicago expect?

APA 7. APA papers are double-spaced on 8.5 x 11 inch paper with 1-inch margins. APA does not require a single font; the recommended options include 12-point Times New Roman, 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial and 11-point Georgia. In 12-point Times New Roman, 1,000 words is about 3.6 pages; in 11-point Calibri or Arial, about 3.4.

MLA. MLA asks for a legible font such as Times New Roman at 12 point, double spacing and 1-inch margins, which puts 1,000 words at about 3.6 pages of body text before the Works Cited list.

Chicago and Turabian. Chicago-style papers are double-spaced, and Turabian's guidelines for student papers ask for margins of at least 1 inch and a readable typeface such as Times New Roman or Courier, no smaller than 10 point and preferably 12. That Courier option matters: 1,000 words in 12-point Courier New, double-spaced, is about 5.5 pages.

In all three styles the title page, abstract and reference list are often excluded from a word limit but always add pages, so a 1,000-word APA paper with a title page and a short reference list is realistically a file of 5 to 6 pages. When a requirement is stated in pages, ask whether those extra pages count.

Manuscripts, handwriting and A4

Manuscripts. Standard manuscript format for fiction and nonfiction submissions uses 12-point type, usually Courier or Times New Roman, double spacing and 1-inch margins. You will often see 250 words per page quoted for it, which makes 1,000 words exactly four pages and an 80,000-word novel 320 pages. Treat that figure as a counting convention, not a measurement: our geometry puts a double-spaced page at about 275 words in Times New Roman and about 182 in Courier New, and dialogue-heavy fiction holds fewer still. That is why the first page of a manuscript states a word count rather than a page count.

Handwriting. Handwriting varies far more than type. A workable assumption is about 240 words per single-spaced page, based on roughly 30 writable lines of about 8 words each on lined letter-size paper, which puts 1,000 words at about 4.2 handwritten pages. The better method is personal: count the words on one page of your own writing and divide your target by that number.

A4. A4 paper (210 x 297 mm) is slightly narrower and taller than US Letter. With 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins its lines are about 3.6 percent shorter, but it fits about 7.7 percent more lines, so an A4 page holds roughly 4 percent more words. 1,000 words in 12-point Times New Roman, double-spaced, is about 3.6 pages on Letter and 3.5 on A4.

How long does it take to read and say 1,000 words?

At 238 words per minute, the silent-reading rate the TextKit Word Counter uses, 1,000 words takes a little over 4 minutes to read. Read aloud at a conversational pace, usually somewhere around 130 to 150 words per minute, the same text takes roughly 7 to 8 minutes.

If you are writing a speech, time is the better unit than pages. A 5-minute slot holds roughly 650 to 750 words, a 10-minute talk roughly 1,300 to 1,500, and a 20-minute talk roughly 2,600 to 3,000. These ranges are rules of thumb: rehearse once with a timer, because nerves speed most people up and slides slow them down.

Pages or words: which should you trust?

Words, whenever you have the choice. A word count is a precise target that no formatting change can game, while a page count depends on five settings that are easy to change and easy to forget. When a requirement is stated in pages, find out the formatting behind it; when it is stated in words, you already know exactly what to deliver.

  1. Confirm the format. Font, size, spacing, paper size and margins. If any of them is missing from the brief, ask.
  2. Write to the word count. Track it live in the Word Counter, and check the Character Counter if a form or platform limits characters rather than words.
  3. Convert at the end. Run the final count through the Words to Pages Calculator with the required settings.
  4. Check the real file. Export to PDF and look at the page count, because that is what your reader will see.

If you come up short, add substance rather than padding: another piece of evidence, a worked example or a counterargument. If you run long, cut repetition first, then check that the tightened draft still reads well in the Readability Checker. Stretching margins or fonts to reach a page count is easy to spot on the page, and it does nothing for the argument.

How many words are on a page?

About 550 single-spaced and 275 double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, and about 495 and 248 in 12-point Arial. Wider fonts such as Verdana and Courier New fit noticeably fewer.

How many pages is 1,000 words handwritten?

About 4.2 pages, assuming roughly 240 words per handwritten page on lined letter-size paper. Handwriting varies a lot, so count one page of your own writing for a better estimate.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

A little over 4 minutes at 238 words per minute, and roughly 7 to 8 minutes to say out loud at a conversational 130 to 150 words per minute.

Why does my document not match the estimate?

Headings, lists, block quotes, tables, images, a title page and a reference list all take space that an estimate for continuous body text leaves out. Export to PDF and check the real page count before you submit.
